Professional registration is an important milestone that establishes proven knowledge, understanding and competence.

The Nuclear Institute holds licences from the Engineering Council to register professionals as:

Chartered Engineer (CEng) +

Chartered Engineers develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems. They may develop and apply new technologies, promote advanced designs and design methods and introduce new and more efficient production techniques, or pioneer new engineering services and management methods. The title CEng is protected by civil law and is one of the most recognisable international engineering qualifications.

Chartered Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial leadership and possess effective interpersonal skills.

Benefits of CEng professional registration

  • The status of being part of a technological elite
  • Recognition of your expertise and hard work
  • High self-esteem
  • Higher earnings potential
  • Improved career prospects
  • Greater influence within your organisation and industry
  • Access to life-long learning
  • International recognition of your qualifications
  • Letters after your name eg J.Smith CEng MNucI

Qualifications

The CEng professional registration is open to anyone who can demonstrate the required professional competences and commitment. These are set out in the professional standard below and are developed through education and working experience.

For further information please see the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment: UK-SPEC

Incorporated Engineer (IEng) +

Professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) recognises your proven competence, commitment, skills and experience. It is an important milestone in the career of any engineer or technologist. In particular, IEng registration shows your employer and peers that you have demonstrated a commitment to professional standards, and to developing and enhancing your competence.

Benefits of IEng professional registration

  • Recognition that you are a professional
  • Identifying that you have the competences, expertise and work ethics that employers value
  • High status and self-esteem
  • Improved career prospects
  • Greater influence within your organisation and industry
  • Higher earnings potential
  • Access to life-long learning
  • Being part of a network of professional engineers
  • International recognition of your professional qualification
  • Demonstration that your competence may be compared with standards applicable in other parts of the world
  • Letters after your name eg J.Smith IEng
  • Your employer will also benefit as increasingly, tendering or post-tender contract compliance requires key members of the project team to be professionally registered.

Qualifications

The IEng professional qualification is attainable by anyone who can demonstrate the required professional competences and commitment, generally developed through education and work experience.

For further information please see the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment: UK-SPEC

Engineering Technician (EngTech) +

Engineering Technicians (EngTechs) solve practical engineering problems. They are professionals with supervisory or technical responsibility, and apply safe systems of working. They contribute to the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, processes or services.

Benefits of EngTech professional registration

  • Recognition of your expertise and hard work
  • Self-esteem
  • Higher earnings potential
  • Improved career prospects
  • Greater influence within your organisation and industry
  • Access to life-long learning resources
  • Letters after your name, eg J.Smith EngTech

Benefits of Registering

  • Identifying you as having competences that employers value
  • Indicating that your competence and commitment to professionalism have been assessed by other engineering professionals
  • Demonstrating that your competence may be compared with standards applicable in other parts of the world
  • Confirming that your commitment to professionalism is underwritten by the support of a national engineering institution or society licensed by the Engineering Council
  • International recognition of your qualifications.

As a result, registrants often find that:

  • It is easier to gain promotion or a new job
  • They have greater influence within their organisation and industry
  • Their engineering credentials are respected in most parts of the world
  • They have access to a network of similarly qualified and experienced experts in their field - through their Institution
  • Their employers benefit as increasingly, tendering or post-tender contract compliance requires key members of the project team to have professional registration.

Institution membership offers additional benefits including:

Continuing Professional Development

As a Professional Member of the Institute, each year you will be required to confirm that you are undertaking CPD and are updating your record. The Nuclear Institute expects Chartered Engineers, Incorporated Engineers and Engineering Technicians to maintain a CPD record to continue their registration.
