How to apply for Fellow (FNucI)

Established Nuclear professionals who have significant autonomy and can demonstrate they have made 6-10 "significant contributions" to the nuclear sector over and above their job role.

This can include things like:

- having published papers
- having sat on or chaired important committees
- having spoken at conferences
- having engaged in significant mentorship
- having made outstanding technical contributions
- having campaigned or educated the public about nuclear
- having made contributions to primary, secondary or tertiary education
- and/or many similar activities. 

 NI Fellows are established nuclear professionals from a wide range of technical and non-technical disciplines, who apply personal behavioural standards and exercise judgement based on an understanding of the Nuclear Delta®, as applicable to their role and work context, to ensure their decisions and actions support nuclear safety and security, both now and in the future.

 Recognition as a Fellow of the NI demonstrates your standing and influence as a leading nuclear professional.

If you don’t have an NI Fellow or mentor working with you on your application, or you’re not sure if you’re at the right level to apply and/or aren’t sure how to demonstrate that you meet the criteria, we’re here to help!
We will have an expert pre-assess your suitability and give you suggestions on how to have the best chance of being accepted. Please send your CV and any specific questions that you have to membership@nuclearinst.com.

Fellow (FNucl) Brochure

We are licensed by the Engineering Council, the Science Council and the Society for the Environment, to assess applicants for entry onto the respective professional registers, at the registration grades of Chartered Engineer, Chartered Scientist, Chartered Environmentalist, Incorporated Engineer, Engineering Technician and Registered Environmental Technician.

Applicants should check the eligibility criteria before completing an application:

IEng
EngTech
CSci
CEnv
REnvTech

Applicants for CEng or IEng must have qualifications recognised by the Engineering Council (check here).

If you don't have the right qualifications, please ask us for an equivalence application to support your CEng or IEng application.

Please note that you must either be, or be in the process of applying to become, an NI Member or Fellow before you can apply for an additional professional registration. If you have a question, please contact membership@nuclearinst.com

Complete the relevant application form for Fellow (MF2 or MF3) plus the Fellow Reference form and email it to membership@nuclearinst.com with the supporting documentation requested on the form.

The Nuclear Professionalism Standard replaces the Nuclear Delta. We will still accept applications made under the Nuclear Delta until 1 May 2025. If you need to request a form for that, please email us.

Fees and Payment

We will add your application fee (£60 for Associates or £90 for non-members) after your application has been received but before your application goes to committee. This will be added to your online account and should be paid before the committee date. We will email you once it's been added online.

Any fees for Member, Fellow or Professional Registration will be added after the grade or registration has been officially approved. If you are part of a company scheme and they are paying for you, we will invoice them directly. Otherwise, we will either add the fees to your online account, or set up a Direct Debit if you returned a DD form.

2025 Application dates

The closing date for the Membership Committee to consider membership and professional registration applications in 2025 are:

• 23 January 2025
• 1 May 2025
• 31 Jly 2025
• 30 October 2025

Please note: If we receive your application more than a week prior to the deadline, we will take the opportunity to pre-assess it. We will give you feedback if there are sections where enhancement would give you a better chance of acceptance.

However, if we receive it within a week of the deadline it will go for assessment as is.
