Nuclear Professionalism Standard®

What is the Nuclear Professionalism Standard®?

Today’s nuclear industry brings together a huge range of talents – people dedicated to taking nuclear technology forward in the service of society. As the pace of development continues to accelerate, high standards have never been more important.

Created by the nuclear industry for the nuclear industry, the Nuclear Professionalism Standard® sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours essential for everyone working in nuclear – setting down a baseline standard for the many and diverse professionals who play a part in development, operation, management and advancement of our nuclear future.

Working in nuclear?

The Nuclear Professionalism Standard® sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected by today’s employers. Whatever your role in nuclear, you can use the Standard to help you plan your career, work towards nuclear-specific credentials and demonstrate your commitment to nuclear professionalism. It’s a great way to benchmark your skills and enhance your career prospects.

Developing others?

Whether you are an employer or training provider, the Nuclear Professionalism Standard® gives you a ready-to-use description of the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected by today’s employers. The standard can form the basis for staff development schemes, recruitment, mentoring, training programmes and benchmarking education provision. It provides a framework for building excellence in your staff team, underpinned by recognised qualifications.

The Nuclear Professionalism Standard® is organised into three sections, each focusing on specific areas of competence. Each of the competences is written in a generic, jargon-free language, which means that you can interpret the standard in the context of the particular work you do, whether it's engineering, research, waste management, safety, finance and investment, management and administration or any other role in nuclear.

Application Guidance

2026 Application Deadlines

27 January 2026 (for 19 March Membership Committee)

5 May 2026 (for 18 June Membership Committee)

29 July 2026 (for 10 September Membership Committee)

20 October 2026 (for 1 December Membership Committee)

Q: Why are submission deadlines 6 weeks prior to the committee?
A: All of our applications are qualitatively assessed by 2 volunteers, who then submit their verdicts to the membership committee. Many of our volunteers work full-time, have young families or assess multiple applications per quarter, including complex chartership applications. We therefore need to give them enough flexibility to guarantee a thorough assessment can be completed by the committee date. Thank you for your patience.

Otherwise, simply complete and submit the relevant form from the list below alongside your MF1, MF2 or MF3 application.

IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU START

  • Have you read the section on "Professional Registration" on the Member or Fellow pages?

  • Please read this before attempting your application to make sure you're submitting all the correct information.

  • If you don't meet the academic eligibility basis (i.e. you don't have the required degrees) you must also complete and attach the appropriate equivalence form in lieu of the degree/s.

  • If you send us an application without including the right equivalence form, your registration application will almost inevitably be delayed until at least the next quarterly cycle.

So please make sure you've read and understood the criteria before applying so we can get your application through as fast as possible!
