The Nuclear Institute is the only professional membership body dedicated to the nuclear sector
Nuclear energy is an essential part of the UK's clean energy mix, making it critical that the industry has the right standards and people to support future growth and success.
Representing over 3,500 professionals at all levels across the nuclear industry, from new build and operations to decommissioning, we maintain the Nuclear Delta, the independently defined standard for Nuclear Professionalism.
We work with individual and corporate members to facilitate continuing professional development, provide independent recognition and accreditation of nuclear professionals, as well as offering routes to professional registration and chartership.
Our national network also provides a place for the nuclear community to interact through our events programme, branch network, special interest groups and our many volunteer-led activities.
We are licensed by the Engineering Council, Science Council and Society for the Environment to charter and register those working in these disciplines. However our membership is broad and we are open to anyone working in any aspect of the nuclear industry.
The nuclear industry employs a great number of engineers and a large proportion of the NI’s membership are engineers of many disciplines. As a licensed member of the Engineering Council, the NI is therefore highly committed to the upholding of the highest standards of operation for engineers.
The professional engineering community is working together to address the global challenges of sustainability, ethics and equity, diversity and inclusion. Jointly, and individually, we are committed to innovating and improving across these societal challenges, within our organisations, and ensuring our members recognise the importance of these responsibilities alongside core professional competencies. As a self-regulated profession, we recognise the importance of public confidence that engineering is safe, sustainable and inclusive to all in society.
Our People
The Nuclear Institute is made up of our HQ Team, our Board of Trustees, Committees plus our communities; a thriving network of Regional Branches, the Young Generation Network (YGN), Special Interest Groups, Expert Forums, and our volunteer network.
Our HQ Team performs the essential job of enabling the day-to-day running of the Institute, coordinating the membership, events, administration, marketing and finance of the organisation. They also act as a hub for communication across the Institute and externally to partners and stakeholders.
The Board of Trustees is responsible for overseeing the Institute's business model, values and objectives. The Board works directly with the HQ Team and also delegates some responsibilities to Committees.
Our Communities
Our nine Regional Branches operate in key nuclear industry locations in the UK, with their own organising committees to build a community of nuclear professionals in their respective areas. Branches are very proactive in both delivering the Institute’s charitable objectives and meeting members’ needs with seminars, dinners, networking events, outreach and technical tours throughout the year.
The Young Generation Network (YGN) comprises of all Nuclear Institute members aged 37 and under. The YGN encourages, develops and engages early career nuclear professionals, and ensures that their voice is heard in shaping the future of our sector.
