How to enter

All you have to do at this stage is submit a title and 200-word synopsis to westernbranch@nuclearinst.com. The 200-word synopsis will give the judges a flavour of what to expect with all synopses being entered into the prize draw.

The Subject Matter

We encourage you to present a talk on any nuclear-related topic, whether technical, personal, or social. We hope that this scope will encourage those of you new, or thinking of entering the industry to have a go. For those of you wishing to present a “commercial/sensitive topic”, can we remind you of the importance of obtaining permission from your employer. The competition is a great way to build upon presenting skills and provides an opportunity to speak about any topic relevant to nuclear. Presentations are 10 minutes with 5 minutes for questions. Example topics could include:

  • Energy security and reliability
  • Resourcing: role of apprentices, graduates, early careers, personal progression through the industry, inspiring the next generation
  • Innovations in the nuclear industry
  • Nuclear safety
  • Net zero
  • Reactor design: current, future, SMRs, international choices
  • Waste management
  • Nuclear defence
  • Building public trust and acceptance
  • An individual’s research, whether academic or in industry
  • EDI in the industry
  • History of nuclear and historical events
  • Role of computers/modelling/AI/cybersecurity
  • Economic impact of nuclear to communities
  • Living near a nuclear facility: personal experiences and impact
  • Nuclear myths

The object is to encourage you to gain valuable experience in speaking before an audience.  Emphasis is placed on presentation!
