Jamie Garner FNucI
Can you tell me a bit about you and your current role?
Currently, I serve as a Facility Manager at Urenco, a leading uranium enrichment company located in Capenhurst, Cheshire. My primary responsibility revolves around managing a test facility that will undergo scrutiny by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
What was your route into the nuclear industry?
I came in straight from school as an apprentice at 16 years of age. I worked through the apprenticeship programme at Capenhurst, and have been with Urenco in a variety of roles ever since.
Whilst employed, I undertook a Master's degree at the University of Manchester in Nuclear Science and Technology in 2016. As part of that, I had Affiliate membership with the NI, which was my first exposure to the Nuclear Institute that allowed me to read articles in Nuclear Future and access other content like that.
What made you decide to become a Fellow with the Nuclear Institute?
Looking at the matrix of requirements for Fellow designation, I thought it provided a good summation of all my 25 years of skills and experiences. Over the years, I feel like I’ve acquired demonstrable evidence against the criteria that NI are looking for in a Fellow. Therefore I thought it was a good opportunity to demonstrate my own expertise and be recognised by a professional body.
What do you see as the benefits of professional membership?
What I have found valuable is that by working through the various matrices on offer and the various tiers of development and membership, it gave me a good “roadmap” of what the requirements would be for me to progress in my career.
This was useful for me for my own personal development, and as part of my annual work-based professional development review.
How did you find the application process? Do you have any tips for aspiring Members or Fellows?
Firstly, I’d recommend to reach out to the NI and express your interest in what level that you're looking to apply for.
The feedback I got with my application is that in some ways it was too detailed and I was probably trying to cover maybe too many things in too much granularity.
Consequently I had a telephone interview on the back of submitting my paper application and I think I was able to get over in that telephone interview a lot more of the salient points that the Institute was looking for. I thought it was really good that the Institute was willing to do that for me, in addition to reviewing my paper submission.
What's next for you professionally?
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) remains a priority for me. As an alum of the University of Manchester, I am keen on recording my ongoing professional development, including attending physics lectures and pursuing Chartership in engineering or science. So for me, working towards Chartership is what I'm setting my sights on. Jamie was elected as an NI Fellow (FNucI) in December 2023.
