Welcome to the YGN Chair 2019

The new year brings with it a new Chair of the Young Generation Network (YGN) branch of the Nuclear Institute!

Here are a few words from Mike Roberts, the YGN Chair 2019:

I’m delighted to have been elected as the 2019 Chair and steer the branch through its 23rd year as part of this fantastic industry.

I’ve been involved with the YGN for ten years and joined the committee in 2016. I was part of the organising team that delivered the European Nuclear Young Generation Forum (ENYGF) in the UK and the Conference Manager for the event, and in 2018 became the YGN Vice Chair. I am a nuclear safety assessor in the industry and work for Atkins / SNC-Lavalin, delivering safety assessments for a wide range of industry organisations in the new build, generation, decommissioning, fuel cycle and Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) sectors.

BIGGER THAN EVER

2018 was another successful year for the YGN, delivering its largest programme of events to date overseen by the excellent (now) Ex Chair, Michael Bray. I know I speak for everyone involved in the YGN by thanking Michael for his leadership and hard work over the last year.

The mission of the YGN is to encourage, inspire and motivate young people to join and remain in the UK nuclear industry, and to help develop people to be the best they can be. We will be working harder than ever to meet this objective in 2019, delivering an ambitious events programme that further expands upon previous years. Most notably, the YGN will enhance its support to those working towards professional accreditation with the Nuclear Institute, and offer a seminar focussed on mid-career development. Of course, we will continue to offer our existing range of highly successful events including networking forums, speaking competitions, ‘audience with’ events, the ‘intro to’ series, and the hugely popular annual day seminar and dinner. We also continue to support schools and students as part of our charitable work.

BE PART OF THE NUCLEAR COMMUNITY

The YGN is your community within the nuclear industry that brings together people from a wide range of backgrounds, technical disciplines and sectors. Engaging in YGN events is an excellent way to meet new people, build your external network, and gain personal and professional development to support your career progression.

For those further on in your careers, I encourage you to use your position to help those at an earlier career stage by supporting and encouraging attendance from your organisation at YGN events.

The YGN is run and delivered by a network of volunteers, and we are always looking out for more support. To find out more, get in touch at chair.ygn@nuclearinst.com and sign up to our monthly newsletter at www.nuclearinst.com.

I look forward to meeting you all again throughout the year.
