Bring your skills to a world-class regulator
The challenge
The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we’re responsible for regulating nuclear site health and safety, nuclear safety, security, safeguards and the transport of radioactive materials. As a Nuclear Protective Security Inspector, you’ll be at the heart of our work, keeping the industry safe for the rest of the world. Find your purpose – join us at ONR.
The role
In this exciting and responsible role, you’ll regulate security across the civil nuclear industry, ensuring duty holders comply with legislation and that operations are safe and secure. It means you could be assessing security plans in the office one day and visiting duty holders the next. With all aspects of physical security, personnel security and nuclear transport security to cover, you’ll have a wide-ranging role.
As you’ll be dealing with a variety of people, within and outside ONR, it’s important that you can engage with others in a collaborative way. You’ll meet senior stakeholders, duty holders and ONR colleagues, so you need to be a natural people-person who can give presentations, explain technical matters, write reports and communicate well.
The person
This is an opportunity to lead and shape our society’s future use of nuclear technology, so you need to be qualified. We’re looking for a good honours degree, an accredited Level 6 qualification or equivalent in a security subject appropriate to the role. You should also be a member of a relevant professional institution (e.g. the Security Institute), or have equivalent experience. Whatever your credentials, you’ll need to have worked in a high-hazard industry.
Although we’ll give you training to bring you up to speed, you must be a highly experienced protective security practitioner already, with good knowledge of risk management. With this background, you’ll be an expert in two of the following areas: personnel security, policing and guarding, or emergency preparedness and response. Crucially, you’ll have an eye for detail – so you’ll read the job description thoroughly. Add your ability to work independently or as part of a team, and you could be the person we’re looking for. If you thrive in fast-paced, supportive environments, this could be the role for you.
The rewards
We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £68,954 - £79,219 (plus £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable). Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits), and generous holiday entitlement.
