ONR: Nuclear Safeguards Inspector

£63,975 - £73,431 | Bootle, London, Cheltenham

Work with a sense of purpose – help keep the UK’s nuclear industry safe and secure.

Why join us?:

We are the UK’s independent nuclear regulator, dedicated to keeping the UK’s nuclear industry safe and secure. We invest in our people to build capability and resilience within our great teams, underpinned by our inherent focus on inclusion and excellence. Our values, ‘supportive, open-minded, fair and accountable,’ shape how we work. Use your professional expertise to make a positive impact. Be part of a team committed to being a modern, transparent regulator delivering trusted outcomes and value. And, support our mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. As a Nuclear Safeguards Inspector, you’ll have the chance to work with stakeholders in the UK and all over the world, as you perform a vital role. With our training and your skills, you’ll be an outstanding asset to the ONR team.

What you’ll be doing:

Nuclear Safeguards Inspectors regulate safeguards across the civil nuclear industry. They ensure duty holders comply with relevant legislation and that nuclear material is accounted for and controlled. As part of the team, you’ll engage with a range of stakeholders, carry out compliance inspections, and perform assessments of accountancy and control plans and safeguards-relevant design information to ensure duty holders manage the risk correctly. It’s a crucial task but you’ll be ready for the challenge.

Your role will cover all aspects of nuclear material accountancy, control and safeguards – but we won’t expect you to know everything from day one. You’ll be working as part of a supportive team and receiving training on how we work over the next six to eight months, so you’ll need the drive to learn.

What do you need to be great for this role?

At this level, you will need experience as a nuclear material accountant or safeguards practitioner. We’re also looking for a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant science, engineering or political science subject. With this background, you’ll have a firm grasp of current and emerging domestic and international safeguards development, plus the ability to work collaboratively. Highly articulate in person and on paper, you’ll be a natural team worker.
