Central England Branch: AGR Fuel Storage in the 21st Century

In this lecture, Dr Steve Walters will discuss the need to store some 6000 te of un-reprocessed AGR fuel for several decades in wet pond storage (waiting for a GDF), and the concerns over fuel failure and corrosion. The situation is complicated by a proportion of the stainless steel fuel cladding being sensitised to corrosion via neutron irradiation, and the elaborate measures to control the environmental chemistry and yet permit the release of radiolytic hydrogen.

The lecture will also discuss the extended programme of research commissioned by NDA, much of which has been carried out by NNL - often in conjunction with academia.
