Central England Branch: Characterisation and remediation of nuclear legacy wastes from the former Soviet Union
Speaker: Ian Adsley, Former Research and Development Manager, Nuvia
When the former USSR collapsed it left a lot of dangerous nuclear waste legacies. The G8 countries resolved to address some of these problems and individual companies provided technical and project management support to the various governments. The UK launched its own projects. They were managed through the Business and Foreign offices who contracted the work to the major UK nuclear companies.
This talk covers the work undertaken by NUVIA – the company I worked for at the time. An important aspect of the work was the necessity to characterise the wastes as this information was needed before any remedial actions could be undertaken. Five projects are described, ranging from spent submarine fuel, redundant submarines, a sunken submarine, the Chernobyl shelter and the experimental fast (sodium cooled) reactor in Kazakhstan. The period over which this work was undertaken was 2000 to 2010.
