Central England Branch: Exploring the world beneath our feet - geological investigations for deep repository
This talk will explain how NWS (Nuclear Waste Services) go about investigating the rocks deep underground and how these investigations are supporting the siting of a deep Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) for high-level radioactive waste.
It will discuss the use of techniques derived from the exploration of natural resources to build a picture of the Earth's subsurface and how this will influence the siting of a GDF. It will tell the story of the work NWS has done to date and the work still planned in the communities we are in partnership with and finally, will provide some insight into the unique challenges we have being a first-of-a-kind project in the UK.
