Speakers

Dr Emilio Escauriza – Experimental Scientist

Topic: Welcome to Nuclear Fusion and First Light Fusion

I grew up in Oxford and, after a year of working the punts on the river and travelling in India and the United States, I attended the University of Manchester to study physics. I then worked as a tutor and teacher in London before returning to Oxford to start a DPhil in shock physics. I was fortunate to be co-sponsored by First Light Fusion, who encouraged me to apply for a role in the experimental group upon completion.

Dr Rafel Bordas – Lead Data Scientist

Topic: Computational Science – Bayesian Approach

I joined First Light Fusion in February 2021, where I now lead a team of three Data Scientists, all at the post-doctoral level, applying Machine Learning methods to accelerate IFE design optimisation workflows and Bayesian methods to analyse IFE data. Previously, I spent 5 years developing commercial uncertainty quantification, Bayesian optimisation and model calibration software tools for use in the Energy industry.
