Vacancy Overview

EDF Energy Nuclear Skills Alliance (NSA) will provide a range of technical training programmes and courses to support the compliance and continual improvement of our existing PWR and AGR fleet, as well as the development and delivery of new programmes to support the commissioning and operation of Hinkley Point C (HPC) and future UK reactor designs.

The NSA PWR operations instructor will prepare and deliver training in reactor systems, technology and operations to facilitate the growth of systems and operations expertise across the business.

We are seeking applicants with a strong nuclear operations background in PWR reactor technology. Successful candidates will take personal responsibility for training programmes to ensure technical accuracy, adherence to training standards and procedures and excellence in quality of delivery - be it in a classroom or simulator environment.

Nature and Scope

The NSA is a structured collaboration between EDF Energy Generation and Nuclear New Build (NNB) focussed on delivering technical skills and competencies to support EDF Energy's nuclear businesses. It brings together technical training teams from the EDF Energy's Nuclear Power Academy (NPA) and Nuclear New Build (NNB). The NSA is responsible for the development, delivery and assurance of training solutions in support of the competence of HPC & existing nuclear staff.

The PWR operations instructor will be a member of the training team reporting to the Operations Training Group Head.

The PWR operations instructor will ensure full deployment of and compliance with the systematic approach to training, supporting continuous improvement in plant and personnel performance. They will provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and guidance to reinforce fundamental work practices, error prevention techniques, and technical knowledge to improve individual and plant performance. They will also provide advice and guidance on relevant training matters with particular reference to Site Licence Conditions as required through business needs.

They must draw upon subject matter expertise to make decisions regarding the content of technical training and how to harness modern adult learning theory to put across the complex concepts and theories that lie at the heart of nuclear power plant technology.

This role may include travel between stations and EDF Energy premises. Some travel abroad may also be necessary.

Previous operations experience of Westinghouse PWR technology is highly desirable. Main control room and/or simulator experience would be advantageous. 

The post holder will need to ensure that all activities are carried out with full regard to Site Licence requirements, statutory regulations, company and location directives, procedures and safety rules.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Undertake fleet certified instructor (FCI) training and be mentored until fully developed.
  • Undertake specific systems and simulator training at Sizewell B power station (if required)
  • Prepare, deliver and evaluate nuclear power plant systems and operations training in accordance with all phases of the systematic approach to training process.


Take ownership of specific courses to organise and co-ordinate resource to undertake session delivery, overseeing its implementation to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for a specific topic area(s), establishing a close relationship with the line department to ensure training content keeps pace with procedural, technological and operating experience developments within your area of responsibility.
  • During the delivery of training, exercise appropriate simulator & class management techniques to ensure the setting and reinforcement of training and behavioural values, standards and expectations.
  • Mentor colleague instructors to undertake technical training in nuclear power plant systems as required.



Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

The successful candidate will be characterised by the following knowledge, qualifications and experience:

Essential

  • Relevant PWR operations subject matter knowledge
  • Good interpersonal effectiveness and communication skills
  • Ability to function effectively as a reliable, valuable and contributing team member
  • Ability to identify, analyse and resolve problems
  • Experience in developing strong customer and stakeholder relations
  • Strong mentoring, coaching and influencing skills
  • Flexibility to adapt, learn and undertake delivery of new areas of training as required


Desirable

  • Significant technical knowledge/operations experience of Westinghouse 4 loop PWR technology
  • Degree or higher level qualification, in a relevant technical subject
  • Chartered Engineer/Professional Engineer status or equivalent
  • Simulator experience
  • Experience of the delivery of high quality technical/simulator training
  • SAT (Systematic Approach to Training) process knowledge
  • Knowledge of modern learning methods and media and experience of bringing these to bear in the development and delivery of training
  • Holder of a recognised teaching/training qualification
