Change of CEO at the Nuclear Institute

As many members, volunteers and stakeholders will be aware, our CEO Sarah Beacock, will be leaving the NI at the end of July after seven and a half years with the institute.

From early 2017, Sarah has worked with successive trustees and staff to guide the Institute through the significant challenges it faced back then and the more recent challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. After almost a decade of deficits, the last three years of increasing surpluses have put the NI in a more secure position for the future. Significant investment in member services and expansion of activity to support the nuclear industry will continue in 2024 and beyond. You can read more about Sarah’s reflections on her time at the NI in the July/August issue of Nuclear Future.

In the meantime, we are also delighted to introduce Sarah’s replacement as CEO.

Robert Gofton is the current CEO of the Royal Life Saving Society UK, a position he has held for over five years. He brings extensive experience from both the charity and private sectors, and his background includes expertise in commercial businesses, fundraising, and large membership-led and voluntary organisations.

Robert holds a degree in Marketing and Accounting from De Montfort University and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from Falmouth University. He is a Chartered Manager and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

In addition to his full-time role, Robert serves as a Trustee for the mental health charity Step One. In his leisure time, he enjoys surfing.

Sarah says: “The last seven years have been an exciting time for the industry and the NI. I shall miss the many people I have been privileged to work with but keen to watch its future progress. I look forward to Robert continuing the great success of recent years.”

On joining the NI, Robert says: “I am delighted to be taking up the role of Chief Executive Officer. This is a fantastic time to join the nuclear sector and offers significant opportunities for the organisation. I can’t wait to get started, meet many of our members and help the Institute become even more successful.”

NI President, Fiona Rayment OBE FREng, says: “I am delighted to welcome Robert as our next CEO. I’m convinced that through his skills and experience, he will drive our continued success in line with our charitable objectives and focused on membership value.

Through Sarah’s leadership, the Nuclear Institute has moved on from strength to strength and I’d like to thank her on behalf of the NI and all of our volunteers for everything she has enabled. We wish her every success in her future endeavours.”
