Great British Energy - Nuclear (GBE-N) has become a company member of the Nuclear Institute, continuing its support for nuclear professionals in the UK.
As a member, GBE-N will offer enhanced support to its team with access to the Nuclear Institute’s suite of member benefits.
GBE-N’s mandate is to deliver, enable and advise on new nuclear projects, collaborating with government and industry to initiate projects, secure sites, select technologies, deploy development funding and build skills.
Rachel Welch, Chief People Officer at GBE-N, said:
“At Great British Energy – Nuclear, we believe that our strength lies in the expertise, passion, and commitment of our people. By supporting Nuclear Institute membership, we ensure our people remain at the forefront of industry innovation and best practice, empowering a highly skilled and resilient workforce.”
This follows the launch of the Nuclear Institute’s new strategy earlier this year which outlined its plans to further support its 5,000 members, through developing its membership offering, amplifying members’ voices, promoting professionalism, and connecting members.
Robert Gofton, CEO of Nuclear Institute, said: “GBE-N’s commitment through our company membership demonstrates their dedication to advancing professionalism. It comes at an exciting time for the industry, with recent government investment in our country’s nuclear defence and energy.
“By joining as a company member, they are empowering their team with access to our extensive resources and networks, strengthening our shared mission to drive sustainable growth in the sector.”
Supporting future talent
The company membership follows GBE-N’s commitment to future nuclear professionals, becoming the Institute’s Young Generation Network (YGN) company partner in April 2025.
During the three year partnership, GBE-N will collaborate with the YGN to build an inclusive early careers community within GBE-N and support and inspire the next generation of nuclear professionals joining the sector by championing the YGN.

The YGN plays a crucial role in fostering talent, providing early-career professionals with the networks, knowledge, and opportunities to grow. Delivered by a dedicated volunteer committee, any Nuclear Institute member under the age of 37 automatically becomes a network member.
Robert added: “As an industry, we need 40,000 net new entrants by 2030 to keep pace with the growth of the sector and currently there is a 2:1 ratio of jobs to nuclear workers in the UK. It’s crucial that we give young talent the skills, opportunities and training to help us to reach this target together.
“Great British Energy - Nuclear’s involvement is providing opportunities for young professionals to engage cutting-edge nuclear initiatives, develop critical skills, and connect with industry leaders.”
Many YGN members have built successful careers in the sector, including Alys Gardner, GBE-N’s Head of Skills and Development, who was YGN Chair in 2016. Alys said: “Volunteering with the YGN has been hugely influential on my career to date; I gained leadership skills, a network of contacts across the sector and a passion for continuous learning from an early stage in my career. I’m so pleased that colleagues in GBE-N will get the opportunity to interact closely with the YGN and the NI and experience the benefits of these organisations for themselves”.
