Four of our Nuclear Institute STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) ambassadors recently captured the imagination of the UK's next generation of professionals at the Big Bang North West schools' STEM fair. The volunteers manned a joint Nuclear Institute North West Branch & Nuclear Institute Young Generation Network Stand, flying the flag for the nuclear industry.
Using interactive activities developed by NI members, the four enthusiastic volunteers engaged with a hall packed full of Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 school students (ages 7 to 14). Visitors to the stand got to try their hand at maintaining some pipework in a nuclear fuel reprocessing facility glovebox, as well as helping to remotely handle some radioactive nuclear waste using a pair of decommissioning ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles).
NI NW Branch Chair Monica Mwanje commented: “The NI NW Branch is committed to supporting STEM outreach activities and engaging with the next generation. The branch was delighted to have the opportunity to exhibit alongside the YGN on this occasion. The branch’s presence at the Big Bang North West would not have been possible without our volunteers and I would like to thank Matt Harrison, Colin Grime, Tim Marshall and Rory Spencer for giving their time and representing the branch at this fair.”
