Cumbria - YGN Speaking Competition

Cumbria Young Speaking Competition

On the 10th of May the Nuclear Institute Cumbria Branch Young Generation Network (YGN) Speaking Competition event was held at the National College for Nuclear in Workington.

The evening consisted of six varied and highly engaging presentation related to different aspects of nuclear energy such us nuclear safety culture, waste management and nuclear new build. A panel of three inspirational judges: Claire Gallery-Strong (Founding member of the YGN and Head of Business Improvement at Sellafield Ltd), Matt Aukett (YGN Cumbria Branch Chair) and Graham McLachlan (former president of speakers clubs) had a very hard time deciding which presentation was the best.

Thank you very much indeed to The National College for Nuclear for allowing us to host the event, our three judges and all our speakers who all made the evening an amazing event and opportunity to showcase the talented young members of our industry.

Jonathan Spencer of Sellafield Ltd, with his engaging and clear presentation on his personal opinion on nuclear new build locally and the implications on the local economy and comparing it very creatively to eating chocolate, won the competition and proceeds to the national final. Good Luck Jonathan.

The top three were:

3rd- Joshua Tuner (NNL) – “Post Operational Clean Out at Sellafield: A High Level Waste Perspective”

2nd - Fergus Baird (Jacobs) - “Is our nuclear safety culture scaring the country? Can there be smoke without fire?”

1st – Jonathan Spencer (SL) “Thanks or no thanks? The benefits for a nuclear new build”
