Making it Work: free Engineering Council event on engineering competence for a sustainable world

Engineers have a crucial role to play in achieving global goals and building a more sustainable world. A free, online event on 21 April will set out the big picture of how professional standards and guidance can support practising engineers, at all career levels, towards this goal and drill down to how those apply in their day-to-day work.

In the one hour webinar ‘Making It Work’, UN Assistant Secretary-General Nikhil Seth will discuss the UN Sustainable Development Goals, their importance and how Engineering Council Standards can help achieve these goals.

Google’s AI/Machine Learning Practice Lead, Dr Larissa Suzuki CEng, will share her experience of how professional standards support her, as an individual engineer working in a cutting-edge field.

Chief Executive of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) Terry Fuller CEng will present the latest ‘Guidance on Sustainability’, which provides high level principles for every engineering field and discipline.

Demonstrating how that can be applied to a specific sector, Technical Manager of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and Sustainability Consultant Julie Godefroy CEng will explain the relevance of this guidance for CIBSE and the related resources the institution offers. Clara Bagenal George will then give practical examples of how she applies this guidance in her day-to-day engineering work, as a Building Services Engineer.

As the regulatory body for the UK engineering profession, the Engineering Council publishes professional standards and guidance to support engineers and technicians throughout their careers.

The ‘UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence’ (UK-SPEC) sets out the engineering competence and commitment required for registration and the new, fourth edition has an increased emphasis on sustainability and ethics. UK-SPEC is available online at: www.engc.org.uk/ukspec4th

The latest ‘Guidance on Sustainability’, which emphasises the importance of engineers taking a proactive role and highlights the need to design in sustainability from the start, is available at: www.engc.org.uk/sustainability

The Engineering Council’s free online event ‘Making It Work – using professional standards and guidance to develop engineering competence for a sustainable world’, is suitable for engineers, engineering students and interested members of the public.

The event will take place on 21 April at 1pm UK time, hosted by Engineering Council Chairman, Professor Chris Atkin CEng FRAeS FREng. To book your place, register now at: www.engc.org.uk/makingitwork
