The Nuclear Institute was involved in two Big Bang Near Me regional events in the North East earlier this month with volunteers engaging school children in nuclear energy.
The Big Bang is a free programme of events designed to show how science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects make a difference in the real world to students in secondary education including potential careers.
NI volunteers demonstrated fun activities to over 1,000 local students, including showing how a nuclear reactor works and allowing them to get hands-on with radiation monitoring of household items, showing how radioactivity is all around us and positively impacts our lives.
This is the second year that the NI has been involved in supporting the Big Bang in the North East, attending events in Darlington and Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Darlington exhibition stand was manned by NI volunteers Prabha Chelliah (EDF Energy) and Liz Hearnden (Nuclear NSA) (pictured above).
The NI stand in Newcastle was manned by NI volunteers Philip Vaughan (Darchem Engineering) (pictured below) and Mark Lyons (L2 Business Consulting).
