The Nuclear Institute is delighted to announce the appointment of Tony Lawrence as Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Nuclear Institute following the resignation of Elaine Boyes, after three years as Executive Secretary, who will be leaving the role in September to take on a new opportunity in her home county of Yorkshire.
Nuclear Institute President Tim Chittenden thanked Elaine Boyes for her contribution to the Nuclear Institute noting that she had been instrumental in delivering many positive changes, such as the move from the obsolete offices in Catford to more modern and central facilities in Mayfair, and had led the modernisation of the institute’s systems, IT and website. On behalf of the NI he wished her well in her new career.
The Institute is currently undergoing strategic developments to improve its role in supporting professionals in the nuclear industry, with recent staffing appointments aiding this progression. Tim Chittenden welcomed Tony to the headquarters team; with his wealth of experience he will have much to offer the Institute during his term of office.
Tony has been a member and active supporter of the Nuclear Institute since the 1990s and took the lead in organising Nuclear Congress in 2003 as well as skills seminars. It is planned that he will take on the CEO position for an interim period of six months.
With over 30 years’ experience in the nuclear industry, Tony's previous responsibilities have included roles at UK Atomic Energy Authority, Sellafield, BNFL Engineering Ltd, NNC (now AMEC) and West Cumbria Business Cluster (now Britain’s Energy Coast Business Cluster).
He said: "This is an exciting opportunity; the Nuclear Institute is a great organisation that everyone who works in or associated with the industry should be a part of. The work the Institute does and the professionalism of the staff, trustees and volunteer members makes this a role that I am thrilled to take on."
The Nuclear Institute is the primary body representing nuclear professionals. It is a growing body that works though local UK branches, Special Interest Groups and operational committees. Company members and partners of the institute are key in supporting the development and standards in the nuclear sector by showing their commitment to both the industry and professional development.
