nucleargraduates is the most comprehensive graduate scheme the industry has ever seen, formed by leading businesses and organisations to develop the next generation of engineers, scientists, business minds, talented managers and financial experts.
As part of the training programme, graduates are asked to work in teams to set up, operate, and shut down a small business.
Graduates were asked to think about the triple bottom line – People, Profit, and Planet – whilst operating their businesses. An important aspect of the SME Challenge is that each team has chosen a charity, and all profits made from each business will be donated in full to these charities when the businesses are shut down in autumn 2019.
All four teams successfully pitched for funding from a panel of experts in September 2018, and the YGN Annual Day Seminar provided the first opportunity for the teams to make their first ever sales. There are 4 teams: Power Plants, Planet One, SCRIBO Notebooks and Picante Chili Co.

Power Plants
Power Plants are a small start-up selling grow-your-own sunflower kits, with 100% of proceeds going to our charity, Growing Well.
Growing Well are a mental health charity, organic farm and training centre. They work with people to rebuild a sense of purpose, engage in meaningful activities, and build hope for the future. People leave with the skills to manage their mental health and reduce reliance on health services.
Growing your own plants brightens up any living or work space, but did you know it has also been associated with having therapeutic effects on mental wellbeing? We want to provide young professionals who lack the time or space to garden with the tools they need to grow a beautiful sunflower from seed, so we were delighted to be able to officially launch at this year’s YGN Annual Day Seminar.
We had some amazing discussions with conference delegates about the importance of raising mental health awareness, and overall the day was a great success for Power Plants. We’d like to offer our thanks to the YGN and in particular its chair, Michael, for all the help they have given us. We look forward to letting you know how we get on!
If you’d like to hear more about our business or make a sales enquiry, please contact our Head of Sales, Jordan, at jordan.crossley@nucleargrads.com. We are also active on social media; find us on Facebook at Power Plants and Instagram (@powerplants_ng).
Planet One
Team Enten are producing an energy themed STEM book titled "Planet One", aimed at kids aged 8-11. We aim to inspire active interest in energy, climate change and STEM among young children. In doing so, we hope to leave a lasting, positive impact on society through our product.
We are looking for like-minded businesses that can support our cause by purchasing copies of this book which we can then distribute to schools free of charge. All money made during the course of our SME project will be donated to the Smallpeice Trust, a fantastic charity who run STEM events across the UK and share our enthusiasm for inspiring the younger generation to pursue STEM careers.
The YGN Annual Day Seminar was a fantastic opportunity for us to meet industry leaders and discuss our project with them. Thanks to Michael Bray for having us and for hosting such a great conference. For anyone interested in supporting our project or those who just want to hear a bit more about it, please get in touch by emailing james.hawco@nucleargrads.com.

SCRIBO Notebooks
SCRIBO Notebooks is a not-for-profit organisation formed by a team of eight nucleargraduates, with a vision to get people to take note of the world using our high-quality, stylish notebooks. Our notebooks are available in a range of eight different colours to suit all for every day note- making as well making excellent gifts for stationery aficionados.
We were delighted to have been given the opportunity to launch our product at the YGN Day Seminar in York. The YGN have supported our scheme and the SME challenge year on year and for that we are incredibly grateful. The day saw many discussions around equal opportunities for all, which tied in nicely with the aim of our benefitting charity, NABU.ORG, who aim to create a literate world.
If every child could read by the time they left school, there would be a 12% drop in world poverty. NABU.ORG aims to support children in learning how to read by creating local language books and distributing this content to billions globally.

Piccante Chilli Co.
Picante Chilli Co. is selling a range of tasty chilli sauces to help those who struggle to put basic food on the table. The Trussell Trust helped to deliver over 1.3 million three day emergency food packages in the last year through its network of food banks, but they are struggling to cope with the amount of people who are in need. There was a 13% increase in food packages given out this year, showing that people more than ever are struggling to put the bare essentials on the table.
Our team decided to donate all our profits to the Trussell Trust because this is a growing problem that could affect any of us. We will be selling our products to those who can afford a luxury item, and using the funds to help those who struggle to stay afloat.
We have teamed up with two award winning suppliers to bring a range of four exciting, premium sauces. We have something to suit all palettes from the mild and tangy ‘El Nino’ sauce through to the scorching ‘Tormenta’. We will be selling at a range of events over the country including food festivals, local markets and professional conferences.
We would love you to visit our Facebook page to find out more or enquire about purchasing some sauce!
