The Nuclear Institute is delighted to welcome the University of Derby to its Educational Affiliate Scheme.

Our Educational Affiliate Scheme supports universities and Further Education establishments to deliver high quality nuclear education courses to future nuclear professionals, as well as encourage young people towards future nuclear professional status.

The University of Derby provides several apprenticeships, developed in close collaboration with Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd for professional engineers in the nuclear industry, which focus on supporting apprentices and equipping them with the practical and technical skills required for the workforce. These are:

  • Level 3 Nuclear Engineering Technician Standard
  • Level 4 Nuclear Manufacturing Engineering Technician Standard
  • Level 6 Nuclear Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship
  • Level 6 Nuclear Engineering

Apprentices study in the Nuclear Skills Academy, based in Derby, which was developed with industry and education experts, including the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, the National College for Nuclear and Derby City Council.

In addition, the University's Institute for Innovation in Sustainable Engineering (IISE) is co-locating with the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in a bespoke new building at Infinity Park in Derby, next door to the Nuclear Skills Academy, offering exciting research collaboration potential to develop the innovations, skills and capability required to support government objectives linked to net zero and manufacturing growth.

Dr Louise Richards, Deputy Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Derby, said: “As an applied university, we are focused on providing real world learning to our students, giving them practical opportunities to boost their skillsets ready for when they enter the workforce.

“Joining the Nuclear Institute provides our students – and staff – with access to a wide range of resources, events and activities as well as opportunities to develop their professional networks, and we look forward to working with the Institute on these valuable prospects.”
