Work with a sense of purpose – help keep the UK’s nuclear industry safe and secure.
Why join us?
We are the UK’s independent nuclear regulator, dedicated to keeping the UK’s nuclear industry safe and secure. We invest in our people to build capability and resilience within our great teams, underpinned by our inherent focus on inclusion and excellence. Our values, ‘supportive, open-minded, fair and accountable,’ shape how we work. Use your professional expertise to make a positive impact. Be part of a team committed to being a modern, transparent regulator delivering trusted outcomes and value. And, support our mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. As a Nuclear Associate (Nuclear Safeguards), you’ll have the chance to work in a wide range of areas, building your skills and following a career path towards more senior roles.
What you’ll be doing:
In this varied role, you’ll support (or be supported by) our experienced Inspectors day to day. Working with them, you’ll be exposed to a breadth of projects that will enable your skills to grow.
Nuclear Associates undertake tasks across the sector, from supporting regulation of the construction of new nuclear build to the decommissioning of legacy facilities. You will therefore have opportunity to support a range of work: stakeholder engagements; inspections; assessments of nuclear material accountancy declarations and other safeguards-related submissions; research projects; international work; and the development of technical guidance.
We need to be sure that nuclear material is accounted for and controlled, and that nuclear facilities are built and operated as declared by operators. This means a key part of your job will be influencing operators to consider their operational arrangements and ensure robust measures are implemented. With your help, we will deliver reliable and consistent nuclear material accountancy and control. It’s all part of being a world-class regulator.
What do you need to be great for this role?
This diverse role calls for relevant experience demonstrating skills and knowledge which are transferable to nuclear material accountancy, control and safeguards in the nuclear sector or another high hazard industry sector. However, we understand that you will still be developing breadth and depth of experience so we’re offering tailored coaching and mentoring from experienced inspectors. An extensive suite of training will be available including a structured programme. You may also have the opportunity to take up placements within industry to further develop your practical experience.
To be considered, you must enjoy learning and be keen to drive your own development. We’ll also be looking for a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant science, engineering or political science subject. In terms of skills, you must be able to analyse data, produce concise reports and make sound judgements with the support of Inspectors. Clear communication will be crucial as you work with diverse stakeholders. In return, we’ll help you develop new competencies in line with your pace of progress. Our inspectors rotate between roles, enabling them to develop cross-industry experience and tackle new and varied challenges.
