At a ceremony hosted by Princess Anne, Fiona was recently inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Fiona commented, "As you can imagine, I am absolutely delighted about this and honoured to have been at a black tie dinner for new Fellows hosted by HRH Princess Anne.
I wanted to highlight this, as this would not have been possible without the Nuclear Institute.
Why? Well before I applied for Fellowship of the Nuclear Institute I was a Chartered Chemist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. However when I applied for NI membership, I also decided (slightly later) to apply for Chartered Engineer status through the Nuclear Institute which I received following a peer review interview by two other Chartered Engineers.
Without getting my CEng from the NI, I would not have been nominated for Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering. So the Nuclear Institute has played a key role here for me.”
Fiona has over 25 years' nuclear industry experience, working primarily within technology, operations and strategic planning roles across a number of different nuclear sites both in the UK and internationally. In addition to being the Executive Director of NIRO, Fiona also chairs the Nuclear Skills Strategy Group and is a member of the Fusion Advisory Board, the Office of Nuclear Regulation's Advisory Board and the Nuclear Institute's Board of Trustees.
As a Trustee of the NI Fiona has also played a key role on several committees including past Chair of the Events Committee and current Chair of the Assurance Committee and NI Enterprises Board. This award closely follows Fiona’s recognition as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and both awards show the high esteem she is held in by colleagues in the nuclear industry.
