Antonio Di Buono CEng MNucI

Dr Antonio Di Buono is a Chartered Engineer and senior research technologist at the United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL), working within the Instrumentation and In-situ Analysis team.

His primary focus is on leveraging wireless technology for monitoring nuclear facilities. Antonio’s work involves integrating innovative digital solutions to enhance safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in nuclear operations.

Beyond his technical role, Antonio champions professionalism and supports future talent as a volunteer with our North West Branch as University Liaison. He works to strengthen links between the nuclear industry and educational institutions, fostering collaboration to attract and retain young professionals.

Route into nuclear

Antonio’s passion for nuclear energy was sparked at the age of 17 when he encountered the work of Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi, known for being the creator of the world's first artificial nuclear reactor. Fermi’s descriptions of nuclear energy as a powerful energy source, which provides a large amount of energy from a small amount of material, inspired him to question and study why it wasn’t more widely adopted.

This revelation led him to pursue a degree in Nuclear and Safety Engineering at the University of Pisa, followed by a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering. His journey brought him to the UK for an internship at the University of Birmingham, where he gained hands-on experience with radiation detection and using drone technology for identifying contamination, blending nuclear science with innovation.

Antonio furthered his academic studies, completing a PhD at the University of Manchester, focusing on wireless technology for nuclear applications, sponsored by Sellafield at UNKKL Centre for Innovative Nuclear Decommissioning. This research aligned with his current role at UKNNL, where he applies his expertise to advance digital technologies across the nuclear sector.

Nuclear professionalism

Committed to professional development, Antonio achieved Chartered Engineer status, supported by the Nuclear Institute and his mentor, Professor Andrew Sherry.

Antonio commends the Nuclear Institute for supporting him through his Chartership, saying: “I felt well supported by the Nuclear Institute through the process, particularly by my mentor, who helped me to collect evidence, complete the application, and identify any gaps.

“It was a good exercise to put together a plan for my future development too.”
