YGN Speaking Competition: Scotland Branch
This event will host a series of 10-minute presentations ranging in subjects across the nuclear industry, whether technical, social or personal. This competition is among carefully selected finalists from our branch application process, with applicants all under the age of 37 or new to the industry.
Event will start online at 6.30pm. We welcome anyone of any age to attend the evening to support the speakers, and learn something new about the industry! This event is open to NI members and non-members.
The winner of the National Competition will present at the YGN Seminar and receive a ticket for both the conference and dinner.
The Competition
The competition is open to everyone under the age of 37 at the time of the competition (i.e. those eligible to be members of the NI Young Generation Network). The competition is open to members and non-members of the NI.
The Subject Matter
We encourage you to present a talk on any nuclear-related topic, whether technical, personal, or social. We hope that this scope will encourage those of you new, or thinking of entering the industry to have a go. For those of you wishing to present a “commercial/sensitive topic”, can we remind you of the importance of obtaining permission from your employer. The competition is a great way to build upon presenting skills and provides an opportunity to speak about any topic relevant to nuclear. Presentations are 10 minutes with 5 minutes for questions. Example topics could include:
- Energy security and reliability
- Resourcing: role of apprentices, graduates, early careers, personal progression through the industry, inspiring the next generation
- Innovations in the nuclear industry
- Nuclear safety
- Net zero
- Reactor design: current, future, SMRs, international choices
- Waste management
- Nuclear defence
- Building public trust and acceptance
- An individual’s research, whether academic or in industry
- EDI in the industry
- History of nuclear and historical events
- Role of computers/modelling/AI/cybersecurity
- Economic impact of nuclear to communities
- Living near a nuclear facility: personal experiences and impact
- Nuclear myths
The Experience
The object is to encourage you to gain valuable experience in speaking before an audience. Emphasis is placed on presentation! Winners will be offered free presentation skills training and the national final winner will receive a place at the YGN Annual Dinner and the opportunity to present at the day seminar.
The Application
All you have to do at this stage is submit a title and 200-word synopsis using the application form. The entry deadline is Thursday 30th May.
The 200-word synopsis will give the judges a flavour of what to expect with all synopses being entered into the prize draw. The best five synopses, as judged by the organising committee, will be invited to contest the competition via online webinar.
